What this investigation is
The City’s plan separates appearance from operation. Aandammerbrug is intended to retain the recognizable language of the existing wooden drawbridge while losing its movable function. The proposal responds to condition, safety rules and maintenance cost.
Verified so far
- The bridge connects Poppendammergouw and Aandammergouw.
- Amsterdam describes the existing wooden drawbridge as being in poor condition.
- The replacement is intended to retain the same appearance while becoming a fixed bridge.
- The planned clearance is 1.10 metres.
- The City says the fixed option followed a 2023 decision: stricter safety requirements affect manual opening by boat operators, while a fixed bridge costs less to maintain.
- The current project page says work is expected no earlier than late 2026 and should take approximately four weeks, subject to further investigation.
What to notice
- Look at which visual features communicate “drawbridge” even if the renewed bridge cannot move.
- Compare the stated 1.10-metre clearance with the boats using the waterway.
- Treat construction timing as provisional until the City announces work has actually begun.
