The useful distinction is between propulsion and energy supply. GVB’s published specifications show electric traction motors, lithium-ion storage and four generators in the same vessel. Calling the class fully electric would erase that architecture.
What the sources establish
- GVB lists the vessels as 33.6 metres long, 9 metres wide and 280 tonnes.
- Each ferry has two 250 kW electric motors and 134 kWh total lithium-ion storage.
- Four 143 kW generators support the hybrid powertrain.
- Capacity is 310 passengers with bicycles or 400 without; listed maximum speed is 19 km/h.
- Six vessels, IJveer 60 through 65, were built from 2016 to 2020 by Holland Shipyards Group.
What to notice
- Read the vessel number: route assignment can vary, so the class should not be inferred from the crossing alone.
- Watch the boarding cycle—the technology is designed around frequent, high-volume passenger and bicycle movement.
- Do not confuse this hybrid class with GVB’s newer fully emission-free North Sea Canal ferries.
