Vissluis Schellingwoude: a passage for small fish

A two-gate fish lock creates a gentler route between the IJ and IJmeer for species that struggled against earlier passage currents.

Verified so far

Rijkswaterstaat opened the passage in October 2019.
It is one of three fish passages at the Schellingwoude complex.
Rijkswaterstaat says earlier passages produced currents too strong for small fish.
The new lock uses two gates, a weak attraction flow of 15–20 centimetres per second and an automatic cycle lasting about forty minutes.
Target examples include glass eel, smelt and three-spined stickleback.

Evidence limits

No live fish count, migration success rate or population effect is claimed. The diagram explains the published mechanism and is not a site plan.
